Abstract
In an effort to discover whether or not the mental ability of transients varies from that of the population as a whole, a sampling of 500 cases was tested. The average IQ for white transients was 73; that for negroes was 58. Unlike the intelligence quotients of adults generally, which have frequently been shown to be distributed according to an approximation to the normal probability curve the ratings of the transients were characterized by a large grouping in the lower IQ levels. Those who had been unemployed for less than six months ranked highest in mental ability. There was virtually no difference in the ranking of those who had been unemployed for longer periods.
