Abstract
The total dispersion of monomode fibres is resolved into its constituent parts. The use of waveguide dispersion to shift the zero dispersion point to longer wavelengths is described. The range of fibre parameters that give zero total dispersion at 1.3 or 1.55 μm are evaluated numerically for germania-doped silica. Comments are made on the consequences for jointing and microbending losses. Keywords
