The Radiation Dose to Man from Galactic Cosmic Rays

Abstract
The dose and dose equivalent rates to man in the earth's atmosphere have been calculated for geomagnetic latitudes of 43° and 55°, at solar minimum and maximum as a function of elevation in the earth's atmosphere. These calculations are based on a theory of radiation transport which is shown to yield correct values for cosmic-ray ionization and fluxes measured near these latitudes. Depth-dose and dose-equivalent curves are given. Atmospheric profiles of the dose and dose equivalent rate evaluated at a depth of 5 cm in tissue are presented.
