Generation of BER floors from laser diode chirp noise

Abstract
The spectral variations (chirp noise) that accompanies laser turn-on noise may generate BER floors at medium distances (≥40km) in dispersive Gbit/s links. The bias penalty necessary to avoid these floors is determined by the precision of the used drive circuitry, and can easily amount to 1–2 dB.
