Abstract
Incontinence is a distressing and embarrassing health problem for many people living in the community and affects all age groups. This article outlines the prevalence, types and possible causes of incontinence with particular emphasis on the management of incontinence in women. Assessment, investigative and treatment strategies including pelvic floor exercises, the use of weighted cones, neuromuscular stimulation and oestrogen replacement therapy are examined. The author identifies that further training and education for healthcare professionals is essential to promote and develop continence strategies in the community.
