Mites (acarina)—A probable factor in the aetiology of spasmodic bronchitis and asthma associated with high eosinophilia

Abstract
The authors present the case histories of 25 Ceylonese having asthmatic symptoms. Organic arsenicals gave a high degree of satisfactory responses, clearing up the bronchial symptoms and materially reducing the high eosinophilia. All stages of mites (mainly Tarsonemidae and Tyroglyphidae) were recovered from the sputum of 24 of these individuals and also from the urine of three. The treatment also materially reduced the incidence of mite infection. Mite parasitism of the lungs may be a decided factor in the incidence of bronchial afflictions of man similar to the conditions known to follow lung parastism by Pneumonyssus spp. in monkeys.
