Abstract
Both human and animal elastic cartilages were studied for their collagenous and elastic content and distr. Sections 30-170 u thick were used for study under polarized light and 10-40 u sections were stained with elastic tissue stain. Collagenic fibers can be seen in all cartilages under polarized light. In stained sections they are obscured by the hyaline matrix which infiltrates them. These collagenic fibers are arranged in 2 sets of s-shaped fibril-courses which cross each other at an avg. of 30-45[degree]. They pass through the cartilage plates obliquely and enter the perichondrium in the shape of an arch. The elastic fibers form a network. The main direction of the fibers of this net are disposed in much the same direction as the collagenic fibers. In most elastic cartilages the elastic fibers may outnumber the collagenic. Keywords
