Abstract
CONTENT analysis of 68 episodes of soap opera show higher frequencies of smoking in UK soaps compared with US dramas or sitcoms. In UK soaps the smoking characters tend to be portrayed as insecure or vil lainous. Preliminary results from a secondary school audience study show considerable interpenetration between the fictional presentation of smoking and children's perceptions. Keywords
