Abstract
The work of Lösch appears to have been disregarded in the development of the theory of tertiary activity for the attributed reason that his work did not make provision for the earning of excess profits. As Lösch explicitly states that excess profits are the rule in his marketing system, and as this claim is easily demonstrated to be true, his work is re-examined with a view to extending it to the intra-urban scale of tertiary activity. The derivation of the regional marketing system is briefly outlined. Assuming an isotropic plane surface it is then shown how shopping centres analagous to Lösch’s regional marketing centres will emerge as an urban place grows. The internal structure of the resultant shopping centres is analysed using a geotaxonomic measure of similarity and shown to represent a continuum as opposed to the stepped hierarchy that emerges in the theory of tertiary activity, Although the model presented results in a core dominated urban place it is suggested that the model can be extended to consider the resultant relocation of the core activities to decentralised locations. Keywords
