Abstract
The squeeze forming process is a hybrid manufacturing technology. Liquid metal in a shaped female cavity is displaced by a punch and pressurised in the resulting closed volume after which cooling and solidification takes place. A finite element model of this process is described which incorporates both metal extrusion and solidification. The model has been developed for a high strength aluminium wheel component and plausible results are presented for both liquid metal extrusion and subsequent solidification. Some verification of predicted results with available experimental data is also included which shows reasonable agreement. Keywords
