Effetto dell'età plastocrona sull'attività fenilalanina ammoniaca liasica in Gomphrena globosa

Abstract
Effect of the plastochron age on the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity in Gomphrena globosa.—Growth analysis indicates that the plastochron index (PI) and the leaf plastochron index (LPI), formulated by Erickson and Michelini (1957), are suitable for describing the morphological status during the vegetative growth of G. globosa plants. On this basis, the relationship between various morphological stages of the developing plants and a physiological activity have been investigated. Plotting the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity of the second pair of leaves against LPI, two phases are evident: 1) between 0.5÷2.5 LPI (exponential phase of leaf growth) PAL activity decreases linearly (r =—0.99); 2) between 2.5÷4 LPI (mature phase of leaf) PAL activity is constant at the lowest level. The total phenol content of corresponding leaves slightly increases with the LPI, indicating that phenolics may accumulate even when PAL activity is poor. PAL activity is not affected by the transition to flowering.
