Abstract
Wallin, E. 1988. Notes on Didactics as a Field of Research. Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research 32, 1‐7. During recent years the concept of didactics has been given great attention in the Swedish educational debate. The reasons are manifold. On the one hand, there are intellectual reasons in terms of creating a scientific base for teaching, while on the other there are emotive and interest determined reasons voicing dissatisfaction with educational research and/or a wish to professionalise teacher training/trainers. In this situation it is imperative that the scope and content of the concept of didactics are defined. This is the more true as didactics is being socially and institutionally defined by the establishment of research positions and chairs. Didactics is usually determined in terms of the WHAT and HOW of teaching. This article argues for a conception of didactics where the crucial elements are these WHAT and HOW but, more basic, the common base of values and knowledge that determine both WHAT and HOW and their relation. This base is called the rationale of the content and form of teaching and is the object of didactics as a field of research as part of educational research. Keywords
