Abstract
We have prepared a patable liquid diet of controlled composition and adequate protein content using a low electrolyte food powder as the basic ingredient. In contrast to a diet of solid food, the major ingredients of this liquid formula are electrolyte free. Thus, the protein, fat, and carbohydrate composition may be varied independently of electrolyte content. The content of sodium, potassium, and magnesium is adjusted by the quantitative addition of pure salts of these cations. This permits constancy and versatility to a degree that is impossible with a solid metabolic diet and offers an efficient method for performing a variety of metabolic studies. Keywords
