Abstract
John Wyn Owen came from Wales to work as Director‐General of the New South Wales Health Department. During nearly three years in Australia, he also served as Chairman of the Australian Health and Community Services Ministers' Advisory Council, convenor of G10 (a group given responsibility for developing health and community services reforms on behalf of the heads of Australian governments) and member of the National Health and Medical Research Council's Strategic Planning and Evaluation Committee. He has now returned to the United Kingdom to work as Secretary of the Nuffield Provincial Hospitals Trust. In this article he shares his insights into the successes and failures of health policy at a time of increasing pressure to perform for Australian health care systems. Keywords
