Combined Stark and Doppler Line Broadening

Abstract
Hydrogen-like line profiles are discussed under conditions where Doppler and Stark broadening are comparable. Approximate methods of folding the profiles are given which reproduce the line height and width. Ion clustering and Debye shielding effects are taken into account by stretching the coordinates so that the line centers occur at the correct frequencies. Electron impact broadening in the far wing is underestimated, but deviations from more exact profiles are generally well within a factor of two in the wings at 1% maximum intensity. Profiles are given for the Lyman α, Balmer α, and Balmer β hydrogen lines.
