Abstract
Techniques are described for the cultural isolation of trypanosomes from avian bone marrow obtained from living birds or at autopsy. In sampling living birds bone marrow was removed by aspiration through a B-D Lundy-Irving needle (No. 16 ga.-3 in.) inserted into the head of the tibiotarsus bone under aseptic conditions. Cultures from bone marrow of Canada geese proved superior to either cultures from heart blood or direct smears of heart blood or bone marrow for detection of trypanosomes. Surveys in several U. S. National Wildlife Refuges revealed trypanosome incidence of 14% to 40%, and showed a wide geographic distribution. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
