Abstract
In the USA the parents in the typical home‐education family are well educated, reside in rural and small town communities and the employment undertaken is in professional and skilled occupations. Unlike the case in the UK, the largest group is motivated by religion. One smaller group is motivated by concern about the quality of socialization found in schools whilst another has a concern for academic success. A fourth group is committed to an alternative lifestyle. Gradually more cooperative attitudes and policies between home‐based educators and school authorities are developing and the desire for a more flexible education provision in the future is in prospect. Keywords
