A REPORT by Stewart et al. in this issue of the Journal suggests that pheochromocytomas can effectively be localized by computerized axial tomographic (CAT) scanning. This commentary views that finding from the dual perspective of the endocrine surgeon's need for accurate preoperative localization of the adrenal medullary tumor and the health-policy analyst's special interest in the introduction, and financing, of new technologic advances in medicine.Patients with the clinical symptoms and chemical findings of pheochromocytoma are often referred for radiologic localization at about the same time that the surgeon becomes involved in consultation.
