Abstract
Posterior capsular opacification after extracapsular cataract extraction is usually caused by a proliferation of lens epithelial cells. This complication may be reduced by atraumatic surgery, thorough cortical cleanup, and use of specific intraocular lens designs. One-piece, biconvex-optic intraocular lenses implanted in the capsular bag seem to form a barrier against central migration of epithelial cells. Various pharmacologic and immunologic methods are being investigated, but long-term clinical data are not yet available. Keywords
