Abstract
The latent heat L at the spontaneous spin‐reorientation of the weak ferromagnet Fe3BO6 has been measured with a sensitive differential scanning calorimeter (dsc). For single crystals we find L=5.1 J/mol. The transition is endothermic on heating. We have also calculated L from the temperature dependence of the energy necessary to rotate the spins with an applied field from the easy to the hard axis. We obtain L−5.2 J/mol from magnetization curves near Tsr. The spontaneous transition is found to be a continuous one with a width of about 1 K. The field dependence of the transition temperature as determined with the dsc agrees well with the one determined by magnetization measurements. Keywords
