THE UTERINE CONTRACTING POWER OF THE SPINAL FLUID AFTER THE ADMINISTRATION OF EXTRACTS FROM THE SEX GLANDS AND OTHER ORGANS

Abstract
Various tissue extracts, made with glycerol, water and lipoid solvents given orally or intravenously in dogs, caused the appearance of an oxytocic substance in the spinal fluid. A similar effect was obtained upon the oral administration of histamine. Since lipoid soluble ovarian extracts known to evoke estrus were less effective than aqueous ovarian extracts devoid of estrus-inducing properties, and since extracts of other tissues were as effective as those of the ovary, the authors question Dixon''s suggestion of an ovario-pituitary mechanism as a factor in the initiation of labor.
