Grey Squirrel Parasitism by Heel Fly Larvae

Abstract
The larvae of heel flies are common parasites of grey squirrels and domestic animals in the s.-e. States. Those found in squirrels, but not in cattle, belong to the genus Cuterebra. Squirrels killed with well developed larvae are considered unfit for food. Records of public squirrel hunts held on the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge from 1944 through 1949 show a tendency for the infestation to drop sharply as autumn progresses. Postponing opening hunting dates until after the first heavy frost or light freeze occurs would eliminate much needless waste of good table meat.
