The Alcoholic Elderly Client: Assessment of Policies and Practices of Service Providers

Abstract
A survey was conducted of 88 aging agencies serving approximately 11,000 clients to assess their capabilities for serving elderly with alcohol problems. It is believed that the identification of only 1% of this population as having drinking problems is an underestimate, given national findings. Alcoholism was not viewed as a major problem by agency administrators, but few policies and procedures for dealing with this population were extant. Implications for policy and program development are discussed.
