Abstract
We have synthesized a series of side chain liquid crystalline polymers which differ only by the terminal end group of the mesogenic moieties. X-ray diffraction experiments show the existence of a lower temperature smectic A phase following the nematic phase, while optical microscopy was not able to show smectic A characteristic textures. The diffraction patterns give information about the macromolecular organization in the smectic phase and about the orientation of the mesogenic moieties around the main chainKeywords
