Phase Transitions in KNbO3: Successive Displacive/Order-Disorder Crossovers

Abstract
Deviations from classical displacive and order/disorder pictures are found in the soft mode behaviour of KNbO3. A model based on the coexistence of a soft phonon and a relaxational central peak is proposed in order to explain the various anomalies. The large discrepancy between the clamped measured data and the LST calculated values of the dielectric constant,together with the special sequence of phase transitions,are explained in this framework.
