Abstract
The peripheral metabolism of dopa was studied in correlation with the clinical occurrence of L-dopa-induced dyskinesias in Parkinson patients. Within the group of patients treated with a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor (PDI), the combination of all dyskinesiatic patient O-methyldopa plasma levels was significantly higher than those from patients without dyskinesias. For dopa itself, no significant difference was detected. Such high O-methyldopa levels were possibly due to progressive accumulation of this compound and not to a higher degree of formation. No significantly different dopa or O-methyldopa levels were found within the group of patients treated with L-Dopa alone. Results are discussed in relation to some of the suspected mechanisms involved in L-dopa-induced dyskinesias. This publication has 33 references indexed in Scilit:
