Abstract
Opinions current in the literature regarding the occurrence or lack of metamorphosis in acanthocephalan life histories are discussed with the conclusion that metamorphosis does occur. Distinctions between the terms larva and juvenile are drawn in harmony with uses in other groups of animals. Misapplication of the term acanthella for the juvenile and preacanthella for acanthella are corrected. The entire life cycle of the thorny-headed worm of the hog (Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus) is outlined in detail. A chart showing adults in natural size and al developmental stages at uniform magnification is presented. Keywords
