Critères de différenciation morphologique et biométrique de deux espèces de souris sympatriques : Mus spretus et Mus musculus domesticus

Abstract
Morphological and biometrical characters are provided for the 2 electrophoretically-identified species of mice inhabiting southern France. Specific discrimination is possible using 12 morphological characters (3 corporal, 4 cranial and 5 dental), the reliability of each varying with the zone of sympatry; M. spretus is slightly smaller in body and cranial size than M. musculus but much larger in dental size. The M. spretus populations from southern France (northern extreme of its distribution area) seem larger than those from Spain and Algeria. M. musculus brevirostris as a subspecies is considered invalid. The antecedence of M. m. domesticus requires that it must be retained as the only subspecies of M. musculus in western Europe and north Africa.
