Paper 13: Standards for Safe Handling Characteristics of Automobiles

Abstract
The fundamental considerations involved in the handling qualities of motor vehicles are first reviewed in the context of guidance and control requirements. The contribution of the vehicle to safety and the complexities of the driver–vehicle quality are reviewed first in general terms then in specific terms involving various methodological approaches. These approaches include vehicle response parameters and task performance. A brief outline of the history of the development of aircraft handling qualities criteria and specifications is given, and the aircraft experience is examined with a view towards comparing the problem areas common to both classes of vehicles. An outline of an experimental approach to handling standards using task performance is given.
