Abstract
The adsorption of several hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) from water on alumina surfaces modified by the presence of surfactant “hemi-micelles” is discussed. The solubilisation of HOCs in hemi-micelles provides a convenient way of concentrating them on a solid substrate that can be subsequently regenerated with a minimum effort such as a change of pH since the formation and dissipation of hemi-micelles is a function of pH. Adsorption studies showed that the partition constants of HOCs with hemi-micelles of an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecylsulfate) on alumina can be predicted from a knowledge of their octanol-water partition constants.
