Sensitivity to rubber chemicals

Abstract
Certain chemicals added to rubber in processing may migrate to the surface of products, eliciting allergic contact dermatitis, an immune reaction due to delayed (cell-mediated) hypersensitivity. These compounds include thiurams, mercapto chemicals, paraphenylenediamine derivatives, naphthyl chemicals, carbamates, and miscellaneous chemicals such as thioureas. This review discusses clinical reports and patch testing data demonstrating that these compounds are sensitizers. In addition, animal experiments and leaching studies are reviewed. Nonoccupational exposure is emphasized.
