Surface tension measured by vibrating membranes: An application to smectic-and -phases

Abstract
A technique is proposed to measure the surface tension of nonfluid materials by monitoring the resonance frequencies of drumhead vibrations of freely suspended films. It has been applied to the smectic- and - phases of a liquid-crystal BBOA (butyloxybenzylidene octylaniline). The anomalous temperature dependence of the surface tension is in accordance with that previously suggested surface ordering above the bulk transition temperature.
