Studies on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis by Neutron Activation Analysis-2. Comparative Study of Analytical Results on Guam PD, Japanese ALS and Alzheimer Disease Cases

Abstract
Metal analysis of Ca, Mn, Al and Cu in CNS tissue samples of degenerative CNS disease cases (6 Japanese ALS [amyotropic lateral sclerosis], 3 Japanese Alzheimer disease, 4 Guam PD [presenile dementia] and 1 Guam ALS) using neutron activation analysis was conducted. Five of 6 Japanese ALS cases, 2 of 3 Japanese Alzheimer disease cases and all 4 Guam PD cases showed a high content of Ca and Al in CNS tissue with a significant positive correlation between Ca and Al and/or Ca and Mn. A process of metal-induced soft tissue calcification with interaction of other di- and/or trivalent cations, e.g., Al and Mn in CNS tissue of these degenerative CNS diseases is possible.
