Determination of Calcium and Magnesium in Milk by E.D.T.A. Titration

Abstract
Five procedures of determining Ca and Mg in milk were compared. A composite method which combined the method of Ling for removal of proteins and phosphates by potassium metastannate, Flaska''s indicator (Eriochrome blue S E) for the Ca determination, his adjustment of pH (with methyl red) in the determination of Ca plus Mg and the method of Jenness, slightly modified (as to pH adjustment), for Ca plus Mg. This method is rapid and convenient; recoveries were essentially 100% for both Ca and Mg. The superiority of the method seems to result from the quantitative removal of proteins and phosphates at low pH (1.6-1.7) and to the sharpness and reproducibility of the Erio-SE mixed indicator in the Ca titration.
