Abstract
Summary: 1. Thein vitroproperties of 214 strains ofProteusorganisms isolated from dogs, cats, cattle, pigs, birds and other domestic and captive wild animals were examined.2. The majority of strains wereP. mirabilis, 23% beingP. vulgarisand 4·7%P. morganii.3.P. vulgariswas found more frequently in pigs and cattle than in other animals.4. Biochemical varieties of theProteusgroup occurring in man have been found in animals.5. The action ofProteusstrains on red blood cells was examined and strain differences observed.Keywords
