Abstract
A selected bibliography of world literature is presented and the leading lines of evidence discussed. It is clear that various birds can enter into, and survive, a torpid state. Further, some of the experiences, in-chiding the handling of specimens by persons who must be believed, indicate torpidity prolonged until it may fairly be said to have passed into hibernation. From that point, the story is less clear and there is no definite evidence, so far as the writer is aware, as to any bird surviving a full season of genuine hibernation.
