Abstract
A beam-steering experiment was carried out to demonstrate the basic behavior of an optical array antenna (OAA) whose subantenna fields are phased, permitting nonmechanical steering of the outgoing laser beam in analogy to the microwave regime. Good correspondence was obtained between the measured far-field intensity patterns and the calculated patterns. The new OAA concept is sufficiently accurate, is quite insensitive against disturbances, and consumes negligible optical power. Steering angles within a range of 1 mrad were obtained. The settling time of a commanded steering angle is about 0.7 ms; it is mainly determined by the response of the phase actuators employed. Keywords
