Magnesium Metabolism

Abstract
THE average adult human being has a whole-body content of 25 gm. of magnesium. Magnesium is the fourth of the cations in terms of abundance, exceeded only by calcium, sodium and potassium. Despite its ubiquitous distribution in relatively large amounts, knowledge of its role in physiology and pathology is surprisingly limited.The biological functions of magnesium, particularly its role as an activator in biochemical systems, its pharmacological properties and its function as an essential nutrient for animals and plants have been the subject of intensive investigation.
