Abstract
The optimum temp. for growing Type III pneumococci was detd. by culturing the organisms at temps. ranging from 21 to 37[degree]C. Growth, as detd. by turbidity standard, colony count, and the amt. of cell mass (measured in Hopkins tubes), was greatest at 26-27[degree]C, and was better, and the cocci larger and the chains longer, at 27 than at 37[degree]. The capsule was wider and was retained longer, autolysis was slower, and the yield of SSS was greater, at 27 than at 37[degree]. The virulence of the organisms for white mice was about the same when grown at either temp.
