THE FUNCTIONAL RELATION BETWEEN THE THYROID AND PARATHYROIDS AND THE EFFECT OF THE THYROID ON BONE TISSUE

Abstract
The effect of different functional states of the thyroid on the blood-P, the blood-Ca and the parathyroids was studied in rats. The effect of thyroid preparation on the bone tissue of the dog was also studied. An increase in the thyroid function brought about by the admn. of thyrotropic hormone caused a change in the metabolism of P and Ca, which in turn caused an increase in parathyroid function. Hypofunction of the thyroid due to thyroidectomy showed no definite effect on the blood-P; nor was it possible to show any statistically significant difference in the values for blood-P as between parathyroidectomized animals and animals in which both thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy had been performed. The bone tissue in dogs treated with thyroid preparation showed only a slight increase of the normal processes of regeneration when studied by autoradiography and micro-radiography.
