Abstract
This article provides a case study of administrative selection in an English Local Education Authority. It draws on field work and illuminates the process of selection from candidates' and selectors' perspectives alike. An analysis is offered of the assumptions and expectations underlying the eventual choice of the prospective incumbent, a Deputy Head. A model is provided of selection as an instance of career status passage. Implications are drawn for the making of panel judgements generally and for the conduct of administrative work. Keywords
