The Computer-Based Unit Dose System in the Johns Hopkins Hospital

Abstract
The development and operation of a computer-based unit dose drug distribution system in a large teaching hospital is discussed. Physicians’ medication orders are entered into the computer by means of on-line terminals in satellite pharmacies. Upon request, the computer prints an envelope with an individual patient’s medication order for a given hour. A dose of medication is placed in the envelope, and the envelopes for a given patient care unit are delivered immediately prior to the scheduled medication administration time. Empty envelopes are returned to the pharmacy for charting by pharmacy personnel using computer terminals. The computer system produces a daily drug profile and a weekly medication history for each patient. The system is the result of deliberate planning which defined the philosophy and objectives for the drug distribution system. The system provides capability for capturing and retrieving drug usage data and individual patient drug data.
