Abstract
The electrooptical characteristics of multidomain twisted nematic liquid crystal displays (TN-LCDs), such as optical properties, contrast ratio contours, and gray-scale performance, have been investigated by a computer simulation, where the number of domains of each pixel is chosen as 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 120 with the aim of determining the optimum number of domains. It is shown that the TN-LCD with quartered pixels exhibits the best results in terms of the viewing angle and gray-scale performance, and furthermore, that more than eight domains gives the same result as for the amorphous TN-LCD that has several thousand domains in each pixel. Keywords
