Marital Effects on Occupational Attainment

Abstract
IN this article we propose and estimate a status attainment model for married-working couples using data from Lenawee County, Michigan. Our findings indicate that when both spouses pursue career paths, the attainment of each is moderated by the efforts of the other to pursue his or her own career. As is well known, women's career chances are generally compromised in favor of the career advancements of their husbands. However, our data indicate that husbands are also not immune from the effects of the career pursuits of their wives. Both husbands and wives tend to accommodate each other by restricting their own mobility.
