Abstract
Can chaos ever be useful? Well, one possibility is to use chaotic signals in secure communications. But no matter how one proposes to do this, it usually requires the chaotic synchronization of transmitters and receivers. Moreover, there is a limit to what kinds of chaotic systems can work with communications schemes because one usually transmits a single signal. Indeed, the most suitable chaotic systems are those that seem to be not too chaotic – exactly the opposite of what is needed for secure communications.
