Academic Work and institutional Culture: Constructing Knowledge

Abstract
By analyzing three ethnographic case studies, the author highlights how two colleges and one university conceive of and construct knowledge. In contrast to previous writers who assert that disciplinary activity is the agent of knowledge production, Tierney argues that institutional contexts powerfully influence knowledge production and that knowledge is a cultural construction. The paper’s conclusion discusses the implications of a culturally constructed view of knowledge for researchers and administrators.Keywords
