POLAROGRAPHIC DETERMINATION OF NITRATE IN SEA WATER

Abstract
A new method for the determination of nitrate in sea water, based on the polarographic reduction of nitrate in the presence of uranyl ions, was investigated. It was found that sulfate ions depress the reduction current by a definite proportion depending on the chlorinity of the water sample. Chlorinities in the range of 14 to 19 parts per thousand gave a constant effect. Fluoride interfered strongly with the reduction of nitrate, but the use of A1 or ZrO salts satisfactorily eliminated this effect. Other interfering ions and the selection of preservatives are discussed. Validity tests of the proposed procedure indicated that it can be used to determine nitrate in various types of sea water.
