Abstract
Summary: A comprehensive review of the stratigraphy of the Yorkshire Corallian is given, based on the modern system of ammonite zones and subzones. All major exposures of the Corallian beds are described, many for the first time. A definitive set of stratal terms is set out: the term Coralline Oolite is elevated to formation rank, and re-defined according to William Smith’s original concept; the new terms are Birdsall Calcareous Grit and Malton Oolite, proposed for part of the lower Corallian of the Malton district, and beds formerly allocated to the Osmington Oolite respectively. The Upper Calcareous Grit is divided into three members, and its prolific ammonite fauna reviewed. A history of sedimentation is given, and a new species of Amoeboceras described. This publication has 8 references indexed in Scilit:
