Abstract
Fresh human placenta, obtained from therapeutic abortions ranging from 14 to 16 weeks gestational age, was incubated with tritiated thymidine and prepared for radioautography using liquid emulsion. Thymidine uptake was demonstrated in villous mesenchyme, vascular endothelium, and cytotrophoblast but could not be demonstrated in syncytiotrophoblast. This finding argues strongly against amitosis in the syncytium.
