Abstract
Based on the concept of the magnetic vector potential the partial differential equations and the boundary conditions of the electromagnetic field in the different regions in the cross section of heteropolar machines are developed. These are transformed into finite difference equations, that do not neglect iron non-linearities and the effect of current carrying regions. A method of finding a numerical solution for the vector potential and for the magnetic induction is explained. A simplified cross-section of a synchronous generator is used to illustrate the application of the method. Keywords
